Dia de los Muertos Altars

The ESB Mexican American Cultural Center and Austin Veteran Arts Festival invite you to build a Day of the Dead altar in memory of Latino Service Members and Veterans who are Deceased, MIA, KIA, or POW.

For our annual Dia de los Muertos celebration, the ESB-MACC is partnering with the Austin Veteran Arts Festival and invites you to install a temporary altar in our Community Gallery. Please join us in celebrating the lives of our beloved military members.
Altars will be set up in partitioned spaces in the Community Gallery. Space is limited. There are 18 spaces available at 5 foot wide by 4 foot deep, plus 5 spaces at 6 foot wide by 2 foot deep. Traditional and non-traditional altars are welcome.
Altars may contain original photographs, medals, uniforms, memorabilia, and documents at the participants’ discretion. (We recommend duplicates.)
Food is allowed, but must be replenished or thrown out throughout the duration of the display.
Some common objects include photographs, candles, cempasúchil (marigolds), papel picado, pan de muerto, and sugar skulls.

Important Dates!
October 11 - Last day to submit your participation form.
October 14 - Altar construction begins. Participants can work on their altars from 10 am to 5 pm up to the day of the event.
October 18 - Opening Reception! The altars in the Community Gallery will be publicly displayed.
November 30 - Last day altars are open to the public.
December 2-5 - Participants may begin to remove altars December 2, and must finish by December 5.

 Austin Veteran Arts Festival is a project of the Veteran Suicide Prevention Channel. The mission is to unify veterans and their communities through art and enlightening the community on the issues surrounding veterans physically, mentally and emotionally by using art as a healing vehicle.
